Smart bulbs are often the first smart home purchase people make. They're visible, they have an immediate impact on the atmosphere of your home, and they require no electrical installation. Plug in, configure, enjoy.
But with the quantity of models available and different communication protocols, it's easy to end up with bulbs that don't work together or don't integrate with the rest of your setup. Here's what to know before buying.
The Three Main Protocols
Wi-Fi: connects directly to your network without an intermediate hub. Easy to configure, compatible everywhere. The downside: each bulb consumes a Wi-Fi connection, and with a large bulb network, it can saturate your router. Ideal to start with a few bulbs.
Zigbee: requires a central hub (4th gen Amazon Echo, Philips Hue Bridge, SmartThings...). In return, you get superior reliability, lower latency, and the ability to manage dozens of bulbs without impacting your Wi-Fi. This is the choice for large-scale installations.
Bluetooth: direct connection with your phone, without hub or Wi-Fi. Very simple, but range is limited and remote control (when you're away from home) isn't always possible without an intermediate hub.
Color Temperature: Often Overlooked
It's not just brightness that matters. Color temperature completely changes the atmosphere of a room. In practice:
- 2700K-3000K (warm white): ideal for living spaces and bedrooms. Creates a soft, relaxing ambiance.
- 4000K (neutral white): perfect for office, kitchen or bathroom. Clear light without harshness.
- 5000K-6500K (cool white): simulates daylight. Useful for workspaces or staying alert.
RGBW bulbs give you access to all of this in a single bulb. Practical for adapting ambiance according to the time of day.
Scenes: The Real Added Value
A scene is a saved lighting configuration you activate with a gesture or voice command. "Alexa, movie scene" dims all the living room lights, turns off the entryway ones, and keeps accent lighting. "Alexa, wake-up scene" gradually raises the lights over 10 minutes.
This kind of use is what makes smart bulbs truly interesting, beyond simply being able to control them from your phone.
A Few Practical Points
An often-missed detail: never cut power with the wall switch when your bulbs are smart. The bulb loses power and becomes uncontrollable. Two solutions: replace wall switches with connected switches, or block them in the "on" position with a switch cover and control everything from the app or voice commands.
Smart bulbs consume a tiny bit of electricity even when "off" (in standby to stay connected). It's negligible for one bulb, but adds up on a large installation. Worth keeping in mind when evaluating consumption.
