With so many options on the market, choosing a security camera can be overwhelming. Here are the key criteria to make the right choice.
Indoor or Outdoor?
Outdoor cameras must be IP65 or IP66 certified to withstand rain, snow, and dust. Indoor cameras are more compact and discreet.
Resolution
Choose at least Full HD (1080p). 2K or 4K provides sharper images for identifying faces or license plates. Higher resolution means more storage required.
Storage
Local (SD card or NAS): free but limited and can be stolen. Cloud: secure with a monthly subscription. Some models combine both for flexibility.
Wired or Wireless?
Wi-Fi is easier to install but depends on network and battery. Wired PoE is more reliable, needs no recharging, but installation is more demanding.
Advanced Features
Smart motion detection, color night vision, two-way communication, and instant alerts are now standard on mid-range models.
For a standard home, 2 to 4 well-positioned cameras (entrance, garage, yard) are sufficient. Recommended budget: $100–$300 per camera.
